COVID -19 is caused by the virus SARS-CoV-2 and in majority of the infected persons, the infection is mild to asymptomatic. However, it has been found that in the older people with pre-existing illness, the virus can lead to sever respiratory disease. Early detection of the coronavirus is important in reducing the complications and preventing the further spread of virus.
Richmond Medicare uses real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) tests to qualitatively detect nucleic acid from SARS-CoV-2 in samples of the upper respiratory tract (oropharyngeal swabs). The RT-PCR tests analyse three different pieces of COVID-19 viral RNA. If two thirds of the pieces of viral RNA are identified the test is read as Detected (positive), meaning the virus is present. If no viral RNA is found the test is read as Not Detected (negative), indicating there is no virus present.
Samples can be collected easily in seconds and 99% of results are available in 24 hours after our lab receives specimen.
Once the specimen has been received by our lab 99% of results are available in 24 hours and 1% in 48 hours. The result will be shared via e-mail and our representative will reach out if the result turns positive.
Tests are highly accurate and positive results should be treated as true cases of Covid-19 infection. Negative results must be interpreted within the patient’s context and should not be taken as the sole determining factor in ruling out the disease. Patients with a high index of clinical suspicion may require additional testing.
Our team is well-trained on the procedure of swab collection and we follow all safety & hygiene guidelines such as wearing a clean, sterile, long-sleeve gown, a medical mask, eye protection (i.e., googles or face shield), and gloves.
RT-PCR test tell if the individual is currently infected with Coronavirus while antibody test reveals if the induvial ever been infected – even if no Covid-19 symptoms are present. Antibody test gives you confidence to move out of the houses and eases your fear, and employees can get back to their on-field job, policy makers will get a better understanding about the herd immunity and life in overall will return to normalcy.
Our antibody tests detect both types of antibodies (IgM and IgG) that are present during active infection or early during the immune response. SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibody tests specifically detect IgG antibodies that persist and are the basis for an individual’s longer-term immune response.
Antibody test results are provided within 24hrs
Antibody tests are blood tests that are conducted through a simple blood draw. The blood is then sent to a lab to be inspected for the IgG antibodies.
Presence of antibodies specific to a germ represents effective immunity against it. However, studies are still progressing to understand if people with SARS-CoV2 antibodies are protected from getting COVID-19 in the future.
Yes, it is important to continue social distancing and practice proper hygiene since it’s not certain that having antibodies means that you’re immune to subsequent infection from the COVID-19 virus.
Due to limited data on COVID-19, there currently is no conclusive data on the levels of antibodies developed as result of a COVID-19 infection and the duration of immunity associated with these antibodies, if any.
